About York Sailing ClubLocation: York Railway Institute Sailing Club is situated in the village of Bishopthorpe just to the south of York. See the Location Map for more details and directions. Season: Our sailing season runs from early March to the end of October. There is racing on Sundays throughout the season and a Wednesday evening series runs from May to August. See the Racing section for more details. Boats: Members sail a wide variety of boats at the club including GP14s, RS200s, Lasers, Larks, Graduates, Streakers, Toppers and a Wanderer. There are currently four club boats that are available for members to use: two GP14s, one RS200 and a Topper. We are also looking into purchasing another club boat – an adult single-hander – in the near future. Cruising u0026amp; other activities: We hold Saturday Sailing days during the summer which vary from a “try a boat” day to themed racing and BBQs. The club has an annual trip to Ullswater in the Lake District in mid-July, where members take their own and club boats for a weekend of sailing on some open water. Starting SailingHave you ever wanted to learn to sail? Sailing is an amazing hobby. You never stop learning and improving. It takes a lot of concentration, but this brings with it a lot of relaxation. There is great pleasure in using just the wind to move a boat quickly and safely from place to place. Racing adds an extra dimension of competition and excitement, but sailing can be as peaceful or as exhilarating as you want it to be. How can we Help? Although we offer an RYA accredited training course once a year, that isn’t the only way to learn to sail with us. A visitor to the club will almost always be given a chance to crew for a more experienced member, and no experience is necessary. This is a brilliant way to start. Once you’ve been a few times we will ask you to join, but it isn’t too expensive! You don’t need to buy a boat, many members don’t, though once you are more experienced you might choose to. TrainingYork RI Sailing Club has been a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised teaching establishment since 1977 and has both an RYA Senior Instructor and an RYA Instuctor. Level 1 Start Sailing Course – May 2011 The course will cover the basics of sailing and provide you with a solid introduction to what sailing is all about. There is a fee, but if you wish you will be able to join the club for the year at a substantial discount. For more details or to reserve a place on the course please email info@yrisc.org. Racing2011 Sailing u0026amp; Racing Programme Fleets The club currently has a GP14 fleet and an Open fleet catering for all other dinghy classes (GP14s are free to compete in the Open fleet should they wish). Sunday Racing Our Sunday racing programme provides a regular Spring, Summer and Autumn Points series for both of the above fleets as well as a Handicap series which runs throughout the season. The Handicap series comprises a single fleet in which all classes compete. Sunday Points/Handicap racing normally consists of three races, one in the morning and two in the afternoon afternoon. Morning and afternoon sessions alternate between the Points and Handicap series. There are also numerous one-off Sunday series throughout the season which take a variety of formats to provide a varied and interesting programme of events. The first race on a Sunday starts at 11.00 am. Wednesday Evening Series Our Wednesday Evening Racing Series runs from early May to late August and comprises short-course Open fleet racing. Wednesday evenings are slightly less formal than our Sunday programme (though the competion is often just as fierce!). The first race on a Wednesday starts at 7.00 pm.
LocationYRISC is situated in the village of Bishopthorpe just to the south of York and is easily accessible from either the A64 or York city centre. The Clubhouse itself is located off Acaster Lane. Car Parking is available by the road side just before the old railway bridge (The old railway line is now a cycle track). The postcode for the club is YO23 2XB (for map searches on the www) but please note that Royal Mail do not deliver post to this address. To reach the club: Park your car and walk towards the York-Selby cycle track. Take the lower footpath and walk towards the river. At the end of the path you should find the gates to the Club.
